Actually, the gap between, say, Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human. The realm of the real spirit, the true artist, the saint, the philosopher, is rarely achieved. (Louis Mackey)

I’ve been asking myself – who is reaching the “realm of the real spirit” in our present tense? That’s mainly because I still have no clue about my mission towards the universe. I’m still young but I feel that my soul is crumbling because I’ve managed to divide myself in a wide range of tasks and all of them require a different approach. At some point you realise you have to choose something in order to really stand out and then you feel the need to fully analyse every “set” of people according to their mission.

So, firstly, I thought about scientists and philosophers. Then I started to think that the real heroes are people such as Philippe Petit. I had recently seen the documentary “Man on Wire” and that completely crushed me in a very peculiar way. That reassured myself that real heroes determine their path… heroes are self-made souls. Heroes are honest and humble people that sacrifice everything for what they believe. So, the “do-it-yourself” kind of philosophy is key here. On the other hand, the “average human” behave like a sheep in a herd.

The concept of “hero” must the well interpreted. I don’t mean someone that is be praised arbitrarily. A hero is not a hero because he is praised. My hero is someone that, because of his extraordinary actions, is to be praised. It’s really important to give strength to the valuable things that surrounds us. I listen to many complaints coming from people but I rarely see them actually trying to be carried away by pleasure. When you encounter something valuable, YOU SHOULD DISSEMINATE IT! It’s your duty. It’s a real lack of responsibility when people are passive. We must believe that everyone is doing their best and if we want to perpetuate quality, we must emphasize it. Let me introduce a parenthesis here. It’s also important to have a negative approach towards knowledge  just like Socrates. Negativity leads to progress. However, there may be something more universal than negativity – honesty. Socrates’ honesty contains his negativity. He never wanted to convey that he knew something at all. But he fought against the false self-appointed heroes that were taken as wise. Honesty acts like a kind of sieve that might lead to truth. Less is more, and in order to suppress extreme variety, negativity needs its share.

Anyway, let me now venture to someone in particular. If someone in this world should be praised and worth to mention is the belgian Colin H. Van Eeckhout (CHVE). Even though I want to focus my attention on his genius I must first give a very unfair and short reference on what he has been up to. He is one the founding members of the band Amenra and he is the vital source of energy of the Church of Ra – a nucleus of bands from Gent (BE) that share the philosophy of its core (Amenra). What’s special about all this? Well, my point here is that the enlightened mind of CHVE reflects one of most sublime and honest spirits of today.

To keep this interesting and less formal, I would start to let you know about my experience with Amenra. The first time I saw the band live, I knew little about them. I’ve only listened to the “Mass IIII” album and the instrumental itself was very provocative. There’s a strange thing about the flow of their tracks. Technically, it doesn’t push many barriers. But they know how to get you there. The repetition, the way they force you to wait for another pounding passage, the dichotomy between the brutal force and a spiritual slow motion… Amenra gives me shivers. Even the way Mathieu Vandekerckhove strums his guitar, just that tiny little aspect is worth some words. That constant up and down strum feels like a mechanical train and is one of the most important rhythmic aspects of the band alongside with the drum kick. (“Am Kreuz” mid part or the beginning of “Razoreater” are a good examples of that strumming. It creates a beautiful accentuation). And the way he does that while he faces the crowd… and then the looks down… Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that Amenra are theatrical. I believe they are being driven by a deep spiritual force at that moment. And it’s really important to analyse how important that scenic aspect is. Of course that the first aspect that assaults you is the fact that CHVE turns his back to the crowd most of the time; the way he kneels down; and his back tattoo. Some people say his voice is hysterical. I think that’s an inappropriate word but he definitely shouts with his heart on his throat. It’s the more sincere and heart felt voice I’ve ever heard. That’s the crucial aspect about this individual – honesty. Honestly aching, honestly leading to salvation. He’s there to suffer with you, to put his hand over your shoulder and eventually to bend that negative moment into something positive. “From Shadow to Light”. At the end of my first Amenra live show I asked CHVE naively if he was a sufferer. And he gently said that he’s blessed because he could dodge all the obstacles of life. At that time, I didn’t knew so much about him and I was expecting someone hopeless and frustrated. Amenra is negative but at the end of their shows the pain collapses and they recover their composure. Pain heals. And they thank life and they praise life. It’s pure beauty.

Being able to see this band live for the second time carried even more emotions. This time, I already knew what they were all about and I hoped for that night that anticipated Easter very eagerly. I had been mentally preparing myself for that show. Amenra truly changes your life. It haunts you, but it blesses you. I was hoping to clean myself. It was magical. Better than the first time, even though CHVE said that “we sucked” due to some minor technical problems with his microphone. The final plunge from the last track (“Silver Needle. Golden Nail.”) was brutal. Physically brutal, mentally crushing. Perfection was achieved at that final moment.

There’s a lot left to describe and to analyse but in this article I don’t pretend to make a full review about Amenra. I want to point out that Amenra is one of the most powerful vehicles of today. And that’s mainly because of a visionary man. A man of pure honesty that through darkness lead us into the blazing light. Thank you CHVE.

it’s time to trade those tears for scars. It’s time to make your life worthwhile.

sacred stars leave sacred scars. and you’d scar me deeper than you could ever wish for.

nail my torn flesh to the cross. thrust a spear deep in my side. I carried my cross long enough. I wear my love like a crown of thorns. you carried your cross long enough. I wrote you a bible in blood. with my bleeding heart on the cover. and a teardrop on every page. these wounds will always remember you. (excerpts from the lyrics)

Baptists – “Bushcraft”

Some bands are so abrasive that you can’t listen to them very often but, fortunately, that’s not Baptists’ case. They are able to put out those filthy, reckless, angry riffs in a very natural and direct way without that feeling that they’re trying too hard to sound aggressive. “Bushcraft” is actually their first album, which is also astonishing, and it was recorded at God City Studios. Always remember that there is not a single record from God City that sounds bad. Kurt Ballou is the shit, period. The whole album is pretty much always fast and angry but there are also tracks in which you can breathe. Still, you never loose the eagerness to continue the roller coaster journey. “Soiled Roots” is one of the best slow-tempo, anguish tracks ever made, really! It’s insanely disturbing. Also, I have to mention that the drummer is one of the most creative I’ve ever came across.

The album feels like a fucking tornado twist. The vocals are perfect. The drum patterns are sick. And the riffs are really well balanced, they’re not too techy and they’re are not boring. Great job guys, it is not easy to came up with an album of this sort.

Coilguns – “Commuters”

Coilguns is the fusion of a time machine, Luc Hess, and a filthy machine, Jonathan Nido. Louis Jucker is the cherry on top of the cake.

The whole concept behind the album is incredible, and it’s one of a kind really. As the tittle might suggest, this is a very straight forward album, recorded live with killer, fast tracks. It is not one of those albums that were thought for a long time. Actually, I tend to regard this album as Jona Nido taking a really huge crap. The thing is that this is Nido’s crap, and it happens that his crap is fucking awesome. That’s it. This album doesn’t even deserves to be fully commented. Just listen you fuckers! By the away, the artwork is amazing. If you open the whole digipack you get an inverted cross (of a regular one if you’re dumb enough).

Cult of Luna – “Vertikal”

Unlike the previous album, this album reflects much more care and attention. I guess I can say that CoL are veterans. When a band puts out a record like “Salvation” I believe there is not much to say.

First of all, it is inspired in the film “Metropolis” directed by Fritz Lang. The whole album is really well thought, I would say that this is the most coherent album of the year. Its cohesion is absolutely undeniable. Each track feels like a complete journey. It is unfair to pick one of those but “Vicarious Redemption” is simply epic. I had the chance to see CoL live during the european tour of this record and I have to say that they’re one of the best bands I’ve seen live. They have the best light show. And they know how to behave on stage, they are actors on stage. In that aspect they’re really one step ahead. CoL is a one of a kind experience. Don’t skip it.

Deafheaven – “Sunbather”

I don’t have much to say about Deafheaven. I saw them live at Amplifest and they were the best band on stage. Their presence is unbelievable even though the texture of the music is very constant. It’s amazing to feel the drummer crushing the whole shit and George Clack is an amazing frontman. He has a unique, distinct personality on stage. Musically, Deafheaven is not my cup of tea but whenever something is really well done you have to admit it. “Dreamhouse” is one of the best opening tracks of the year.

KEN Mode – “Entrench”

Lo! – “Monstrorum Historia”

Here’s the surprise of this post – Lo! These guys are from Australia and this is their second record via Pelagic Records. I will not say much about the album, just listen. Lo! are special because they give high doses of chaos without being sloppy, they’re solid and very tight. Each track is really well-balanced but they never lose that hardcore rawness. I love the vocals, love the writing approach. Shit this is a great, underrated band…

Nails – “Abandon All Life”

Oathbreaker – “Eros|Anteros”

There is so much to say about Oathbreaker but I’ll just state that the best two calm tracks of the year are “The Abyss Looks Into Me” and “Clair Obscur”.

The Ocean – “Pelagial”

First of all, I have to confess that I usually say that The Ocean is my favourite band so expect some fan boy shit. The main reason why is because Robin Staps is THE genius of contemporary heavy music. Why? 1) Although he is german, he writes the best lyrics in the heavy music scene. And I am referring to both vocabulary and the content of each track. 2) He always comes up with a killer concept album that combines atmospheric parts and heavy stuff – Fluxion/Aeolian; Precambrian; Heliocentric/Anthropocentric. 3) Since the beginning of the band, Robin took care of the visual part of the shows. The lights are perfectly synchronized with the music and the shows are always accompanied with video projections.

Notice that to convince you I didn’t mention a single aspect concerning the music. That’s because I believe that what’s special about The Ocean is the way they ‘take care’ of their concept. Tell me, who would ever thought about writing an album about a journey from the top to the bottom of the ocean? And who would come up with the idea of producing a DVD to play along the whole thing?

About the “Pelagial” tracks, well they certainly have a different vibe than the previous efforts.  I think that in this record you can appreciate every aspect of Robin’s approach to music blended in each track. It seems that their songs are much more uniform. The fact that there are riffs that are repeated along the album contributes to that aspect as well. The only disappointment of the album, in my opinion, is that the two Hadopelagic tracks kind of let the vibe of the album die out. In that respect, I think that the album lacks the kind of deep, imposing atmosphere that “Precambrian” for instance has.  Lyrically, it is by far the best album of the year.

All in all, this is the most ambitious project of the year and only Robin could be its headmaster.

Rorcal – “Világvége”

Terra Tenebrosa – “The Purging”

Terra Tenebrosa, what a perfect name. First of all, these enlightened guys from Sweden descend from the extinct Breach, if you don’t know them, shame on you. “The Purging” is the album that follows “The Tunnels”, another great album.

What’s great about them? No one ever created an atmosphere of this kind. It is so sinister, so earthy and haunted. The best image I have would be crossing a forest full of orcs in a “Lord of the Rings” kind of atmosphere. Listening to this album is such a unique experience, you overhear sordid screams of suffering, you feel that you’re body is getting corrupt and the whole space is disintegrating. Serious shit-in-the-pants kind of thing, wear diapers.

Zozobra – “Savage Masters”

NOTE: I didn’t listen to the new Russian Circles’ record. And, by the way, I strongly disagree that the new The Dillinger Escape Plan’s is one of the best of the year.

Grande noite a de hoje no Hard Club com Death Will Come, For the Glory e No Turning Back.

Destiny a state of mind
Check yourself, are you all right?
Is this who you want to be?
Do you think you’re really free?
In times of trouble and distress
Head up high, don’t settle for less!
Follow the path that you have chosen,
Tell yourself you can’t be broken!
Gotta do what you gotta do.
Believe in yourself,
Make it through!
Take control,
Take a stand,
Take the world
In your hand!

I am always very cautious when I praise an artist. That is because I need to be sure that my opinion is independent, as far as possible, of the feelings I get from them. It is certainly true that art make us emotional but feelings are ephemeral. On the other hand, the skills and the effectiveness of the artists are not ephemeral and can be analysed in cold blood.

After this seeming off-topic introduction let me tell you about a band from Belgium – Amenra. I am obviously very sure that I am not being deceived by the emotions I get from them so I recognize true talent in them, that’s why I am not afraid of praising them.

What can I say about Amenra? Well, my heart forces me to tell that they are simply one of the most efficient bands that I am aware of. Nevertheless, I will try to put these feelings aside. And let me tell you that it is really difficult. Those who have seen Amenra on stage will understand. Some people told me that they couldn’t sleep that day… I can tell, by personal experience, that I was so touched by their performance that I felt mentally brutalized the next day.

Amenra’s sonority could be described as atmospheric sludge or doom. I don’t want to spent a lot of time labeling them but there is one aspect that I think that deserves attention. A lot of people state they are similar to Neurosis and yes, I agree that Neurosis are certainly a  major influence. (The fact that “Mass V” will come out via Neurot Recordings proves it). However those influences do not reflect particularly in their music. I mean, if you listen to Amenra’s “Mass I” you will realize that the root layer of their sound is wicked post hardcore or something like that. So Amenra’s sonority comes from the aftermath of those hardcore roots. I guess that Neurosis are influential because of their “philosophy”. Neurosis is an ambitious project, it is far beyond delivering music and sound. Neurosis is a well-designed project with its own spirituality. And Amenra also started to develop that aspect. Amenra is a religion. A self-made, self-sufficient religion conveyed by their music.

Going back to Amenra’s sonority I think that Amenra are really special because of the following: when you listen to a song, you get the feeling that the song is being played by itself, it has an intrinsic flow. It is quite difficult to explain. Everything seems so balanced and harmonious – the rythm, the repetion. Those palm mutes interrupted by chords seem like brutal Chuck Norris’ roundhouse kicks.  And then you have Colin’s voice, that is really overwhelming. Actually he uses his voice in a surprising duality. He does cleans vocals that can resemble the purest of angels and he can scream his heart out as if his soul was decomposing.

Amenra: you really caused an impression on me. You go far beyond being a band and your philosophy is really enchanting. When I listen to your music I feel the world cracking and collapsing. And, in that process, all my tensions and all my frustrations go away. It’s like going though an infinite density that is falling apart so that I can restore my harmony. You make it all go away, the void I feel everyday in my life. I really feel your hand on my shoulder when I listen to you. I shall never forget the back tattoo of Colin H. van Eeckhout; his devotion; his vividness and humbleness. When I asked Colin if he considered himself a sufferer, he told me that he is a lucky guy because he is a persistent fighter that dodges all the obstacles of life. Amenra, thank you.

The music and lyrics are drenched in some sort of solitude, aloneness… It’s a heart and soul driven vehicle, we try to materialize our “truth” through the ungraspable medium of music or sound. We try to tell it like it is, no means to act tough or look cool. When you’re down on your knees, we want you to feel comfortable in that place. We want to stand there behind you with our hand on your shoulder, telling you it will all be alright.

Sometimes I feel like I can take on the world during a show, I’m unbeatable, immortal. Nothing can kill me. Sometimes I feel goddamn miserable and alone in the world, even though I’m surrounded by my best friends, it all just hurts. I always fight, with whatever and whoever causes harm to the ones I love. My family, my friends. Darkness. I’ll never give up.

There is no point in doing something without trying to get as much out of it as you can. And here I mean spiritually. I feed on these things; it makes and has made my life bearable. It cleanses and heals, salves and embalms the wounds you think will never heal. We all have them, we all have to learn them and live with them. So why not help each other in doing so.

my hands are my hands, so my actions will always have my name. racionalism under the drunkness of identities and dreams. I fall from the hill of nihilism. journeys without maps. pretending these days are
my everything. feeding fire with no desire. we stand behind something. we stand behind
everything. holding on to secret plans waiting for regret.

“we are what we do, especially what we do to change what we are.” – Eduardo Galeano
the possibility of self identity is only possible through our own actions, the journey along the hill of forgettable dreams leads us to a nowhere destination.. there’s no identity without action. change is impossible without a dream.

Soyez realistes, demandez l’impossible!

a

Jodis – Scret House (2009)

a

Rorcal – Myrra Mordvynn Marayaa (2008)

a

The Mars Volta – Amputechture (2006)

a

Fifty Foot Hose – Cauldron (1967)
